We recently had the opportunity to be part of a landmark project that blended innovation with preservation—resolving a leak in a 300mm MSCL water main beneath the historic Mill Inn Bridge in Gawler.
Originally built in the 1870s, the Mill Inn Bridge is more than just a piece of infrastructure—it’s a vital gateway into Gawler, carrying thousands of vehicles each day and playing a key role in the town’s character and connectivity. With the bridge having undergone significant upgrades in 2022, the traditional method of excavation and pipe replacement simply wasn’t an option.
Working in partnership with Service Stream and SA Water, we delivered a smarter, less disruptive solution: the installation of a UV-cured Saertex liner—
the only CIPP UV-cured liner currently approved for use in South Australia. This trenchless technology allowed us to rehabilitate the damaged section of water main without disturbing the road surface or compromising the structure of the bridge.
The result? A solution that saved time, reduced costs, and minimised disruption for the Gawler community.
Given the importance of the location, timing was everything. To avoid interrupting daily traffic and local businesses, the entire installation was carried out overnight.
Crews worked through tough, hot weather conditions, with the UV curing process beginning at 1:45 AM and the liner fully set by 3:30 AM. By sunrise, the newly lined pipe was ready for testing and sealing—a rapid and efficient turnaround that kept Gawler moving.
Final reinstatement will be completed in close consultation with Gawler Council, ensuring the site is fully restored and ready for the long haul—both functionally and visually.
This project didn’t just resolve a leak—it set a new standard for infrastructure repairs in South Australia. By embracing innovation and collaborating with key industry partners, we extended the life of a critical asset while preserving a valuable piece of local history.
At Plumbing & Pipeline Solutions, we’re proud to be leading the way in modern infrastructure maintenance—delivering smart, sustainable outcomes for communities across the state.
